The PhD in Development Studies is the highest level of academic achievement in the field. It requires candidates to produce a doctoral thesis that makes a significant and original contribution to knowledge. The programme is ideal for those pursuing academic careers, high-level policy research, or leadership positions in international development.

Admission Requirements

  • Applicants must hold a Master’s degree with a minimum average of 70%. Admission is also contingent on the availability of a suitable supervisor with expertise in the proposed field of study. All applicants are required to submit a research proposal of approximately 15 pages.
  • Applicants must also demonstrate academic readiness and alignment with the Institute’s research focus areas.
  • While the PhD is offered as a full thesis, candidates may be required to complete relevant coursework at UWC or partner institutions.

  • Development Studies Doctoral Thesis 901 (1st Enrolment)
  • Development Studies Doctoral Thesis 902 (2nd Enrolment)

Doctoral candidates work closely with their supervisors while actively engaging in ISD’s research community. The programme culminates in the production of a PhD thesis that meets rigorous scholarly standards and contributes original knowledge to the field.
