The Master of Arts in Development Studies at the Institute for Social Development (ISD) at the University of the Western Cape is a dynamic interdisciplinary postgraduate programme designed to deepen students’ understanding of social, economic and political processes shaping development in Africa and beyond
Students will gain experience by conducting independent research and writing a master’s thesis on a relevant topic, using a range of methodological and analytical tools. Through the programme, students gain in methodological, practical and theoretical knowledge to analyse development-related challenges and contribute to transformative policy and practice. Through a blend of coursework and a structured mini-thesis, or a full thesis, students at ISD engage with issues such as theories of social transformation, development management, urban and regional development, social and economic aspects of migration and governance, social policy, and education. They are exposed to both quantitative and qualitative research methods, preparing them for impactful work in academia, civil society, government, and international organisations.
The structured Master’s programme combines coursework with research, offering students a balanced approach to advanced study. It provides both theoretical grounding and practical skills, preparing graduates for diverse roles in government, NGOs, and international organisations. The elective modules allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests such as poverty, inequality, or migration.
